The challenges

  • Astronomical cost—Although costs can vary greatly depending on the size of the company, some large retailers have spent an exorbitant amount of money to keep their employees and customers safe. A food distributor has paid $20 million for testing and plexiglass. T-Mobile US Inc. has spent $50 million on extra cleaning and safety gear. Walmart Inc. and three other big retail chains have put more than $3 billion into higher salaries, benefits and other COVID-19 measures.

  • Overwhelming cleaning and disinfection procedures—The CDC has a rigorous cleaning and disinfection regimen in place for businesses that mandate increased cleaning; however, many cleaning products are not to be used around people. This will also mandate the hiring of additional staff and paying for deep cleaning after a confirmed case of COVID-19.

  • Daily health checks—Some states require employees to have daily temperature screenings. This will require the hiring of additional staff.

  • Harmful chemicals—The CDC has an approved list of over 450 chemicals that may be used to disinfect surfaces in your schools—most of which are harmful to humans.
